چکیده

Abstract Recently, structural monitoring technology invested in methodologies that give direct information on structures’ stress state. Optic fibers, strain gauges, pressure cells real-time data the condition of a element, often determining area where peak stresses have been reached, with clear advantage over other less methodologies, such as, e.g. , use accelerometers and inverse analysis to estimate internal forces. In addition, can be recorded log for after loading event, as well taking into account lifelong state structure. Beams columns reinforced concrete frame effectively monitored flexural loads. Differently, thin shells are most their lifespan under membrane regime, and, when properly designed, they rarely move bending regime. Our proposal is monitor structures by small-sized low-cost devices able record history at key locations, sending alerts necessary, aim ensuring safety against risk collapse, or simply perform maintenance/repairing activities. Such realized cheap off-the-shelf electronics traditional gauges. The application examples given laboratory tests performed plate, masonry panel, steel beam. Results shows permanent control conveniently carried out new using type we designed in-house.

The Implementation of Low-cost Urban Acoustic Monitoring Devices

The urban sound environment of New York City (NYC) can be, amongst other things: loud, intrusive, exciting and dynamic. As indicated by the large majority of noise complaints registered with the NYC 311 information/complaints line, the urban sound environment has a profound effect on the quality of life of the city’s inhabitants. To monitor and ultimately understand these sonic environments, a ...

Low Cost UAV-based Remote Sensing for Autonomous Wildlife Monitoring

In recent years, developments in unmanned aerial vehicles, lightweight on-board computers, and low-cost thermal imaging sensors offer a new opportunity for wildlife monitoring. In contrast with traditional methods now surveying endangered species to obtain population and location has become more cost-effective and least time-consuming. In this paper, a low-cost UAV-based remote sensing platform...

A low-cost intensity-based plastic optical fiber sensing system for permanent structural health monitoring

Fiber optic sensors are attracting an increasing interest in many applications because of their high sensitivity combined with other unique properties such as immunity to electrostatic discharges, intrinsic fire safety and minimum invasiveness. However, their wide diffusion in structural permanent monitoring is still hampered by costs, especially those related to the interrogators and installat...

Rapid, low cost prototyping of transdermal devices for personal healthcare monitoring

The next generation of devices for personal healthcare monitoring will comprise molecular sensors to monitor analytes of interest in the skin compartment. Transdermal devices based on microneedles offer an excellent opportunity to explore the dynamics of molecular markers in the interstitial fluid, however good acceptability of these next generation devices will require several technical proble...

Low Cost Attacks on Tamper Resistant Devices

There has been considerable recent interest in the level of tamper resistance that can be provided by low cost devices such as smartcards. It is known that such devices can be reverse engineered using chip testing equipment, but a state of the art semiconductor laboratory costs millions of dollars. In this paper, we describe a number of attacks that can be mounted by opponents with much shallow...
